All Students Virtual After Spring Break

As an added precaution as students and staff return from spring break, Dearborn Public Schools will return to school with virtual learning from April 6 to 9.

Students will still attend live class that week, but will not be face-to-face for instruction. Three days, April 6, 8 and 9, will be changed to synchronous, online learning. Wednesdays, including April 7, are already scheduled as synchronous, online learning for all students.

In a letter to the community, Superintendent Glenn Maleyko said he has visited every school in the district since students started returning on March 1 and is proud to see how students and staff are following all the COVID-19 safety protocols.

“We will continue to place safety as a top priority, and with an abundance of caution we have decided to place all students on a virtual schedule for the week of April 6 to 9 following the spring break,” he said.

The district realizes that many families traveled over the break and may be visiting family for the Easter holiday. The return to virtual learning is only scheduled to last through April 9.

Dr. Maleyko’s community letter also noted that the district is making arrangements for students 16 and older who want a vaccination to receive one in April. That age group becomes eligible for vaccinations in Michigan on April 5.

The district is also hosting a free COVID rapid testing event on April 5 at Edsel Ford High School from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The State of Michigan is running the testing site, which is open to the entire community. More information about the testing event is available on the district website.

While both of those events are positive news, the community needs to remain vigilant in trying to prevent COVID, which has hit Dearborn particularly hard.

“We still have some hurdles to face with the pandemic moving forward, and I encourage everyone to follow the COVID 19 safety protocols to help prevent the spread of the virus,” Dr. Maleyko said.
